Save Karori Event Centre

“I spent most of my life in Karori. I donated because I had the benefit of using the community halls when I was younger. With the loss of the 10 halls that were here, children growing up in Karori didn’t have the same facilities that I benefited from. I wanted to do this for my community”
Gary Parsons, 88-years-old, donated over $100k to the Karori Event Centre in 2010.

Karori deserves investment in its future.
We know an Event Centre will make Karori more vibrant. It will be a place to connect with our community. It will bring events and performances to Karori and support local business. It will make Karori a better place to live.
What is best for Karori? Another building sold off, one that we paid for, going to developers to bulldoze? This is our last chance to be heard and Save our Centre.
More submissions mean Council must listen to us.
Send in a submission now. This takes just a minute of your time because the Trust are helping with all the niggly bits.
This is OUR building and OUR community. Stand together for Karori.
YES! In 2005 we had 10 community halls in Karori. Now we have none.
Our suburb has the largest population in New Zealand, and we pay the most rates to the City Council of any suburb. There are 57 suburbs in Wellington, and Karori is responsible for 7.3% of all WCC rates*
The Council need to replace what we used to have, and have promised to do this for decades.
We deserve reinvestment in our community.

It would be an affordable space for everyone. For public meetings, karate lessons, Fringe Festival performances and youth events. For dance classes, school productions, fundraisers, exhibitions and concerts. For Brownies, choirs, new clubs and even weddings and funerals.
Our community used to have these spaces, why should our kids be denied this?
This is a place to connect our community and bring people to Karori.
The community raised $2.2m through donations and fundraising. Some of this money was from grants that would expire unless used. The Trust took this funding to construct a base building that required finishing.
The Trust gifted the building to the Council in 2022 under the agreement that they would get the building finished and open. We expected them to act with integrity.
The Council’s 2024-2034 Long Term Plan reneges on their promise.

Council has huge fiscal challenges. But, when things like the Golden Mile will cost $300m, and in a recent meeting Council was told $2.7m was budgeted for 20 LED street lights, finishing the Karori Event Centre is a drop in the bucket.
There has been over a decade of promises by many Councils, and this is a small cost for a much needed community venue.
As a result of decades of underinvestment, we understand the Council needs to make a tough choice. This is not the right choice.
